Nutrition Labelling

Nutrition labelling is mandatory in Canada for most packaged foods, including all ground meats and ground poultry.

Exemptions include:

  • Raw single ingredient meats, poultry and fish, except for ground meat and ground poultry
  • Ground meats and ground poultry packaged on request at a full-service meat counter

The Nutrition Facts table shows Calories and 13 key nutrients - the amount of fat, saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, carbohydrate, fibre, sugars, protein, calcium, iron and Vitamins A and C - in a specified amount of food. More nutrients such as zinc and the B vitamins may be included on some labels.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for enforcement of the regulations. This includes assessing whether the Nutrition Facts table has been applied where required, the mandatory information and format are given, the nutrient values are accurate and claims are compliant. The procedure used to assess of the nutrition information is included in the CFIA Compliance Test for Nutrition Labelling.

Canada Pork has developed a variety of Nutrition Facts table formats for lean and medium ground pork. Values for the tables are based on independent laboratory analyses of samples of ground pork purchased in retail stores in Canada and stated according to the regulations. See sample labels.
